Life is too short to eat dull salads.

Even when we’re tight on time, we can whip up simple and gorgeous salads, especially this time of year.

The following recipes are part of a cookbook I was working on a few years ago. Like my first cookbook, it was going to sort recipes by how they make you feel, albeit with slightly different categories: awakened, relaxed, centered and sensual. The project fizzled out, but these goodies remain worth sharing.

For sure, “salad” may not typically shout “sensual,” but these recipes are all from that section.

Bright colors, bold flavors, intriguing textures, subtly rich aromas and fresh, lively ingredients arouse our senses. These salads fit the bill. They also have a bunch of aphrodisiac ingredients (hello: asparagus, cayenne and salmon, to name a few), and they’re delightfully light.

The book I’m reading, “Your Body Knows the Answer” by David Rome, says, “One of the most vital skills we can develop is the ability to pause the momentum of discursive mind and experience our world — both inner and outer — directly through our senses.” I think it’s possible to taste that — with some salad!
